15 Best Dust Free Cat Litter of 2018
In a previous article, I have explained the 2 different types of cat litter for your litter box. You can either choose between litter made of natural pellets (eg. corn, wood, etc.) or you can pick one of the two types of mineral-based cat litter; bentonite clay and silica.
Clay-based litter is by far the most popular litter in the world. The problem with bentonite is that it is not always dust free. Natural pellets are mainly dust free, but they do not clump as well as clay-based litter. You will need to change the litter box more often and many cats (including me) don’t like the feel of wood pellets on our paws and prefer other materials. Hence the reason why most cat owners and their cats prefer clumping bentonite clay litter over wood pellets.
Why does bentonite clay work so well?
When bentonite clay comes in contact with any liquid substance it clumps and becomes hard. Therefore making it very easy to clean the litterbox. Once a day a quick scoop is all you need to keep the toilet clean and your cat happy.
While clay-based clumping litter makes the cleaning process easier (which is great) there is something else you should be aware of and that is the amount of dust coming from the cat litter.
Cat litter dust not only ends up on your floor or sticks to your cats’ paws, but it also ends up in the airways of both cats and humans. This can lead to some serious health problems for you and your cat. Especially for people with asthma, or in case of the cat, feline allergic bronchitis, they will be able to tell you how important it is to choose a good dust free cat litter.
One of the best known and most popular brands which produce low dust cat litter in the United States is Dr. Elsey’s Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter. A great brand with many high-quality products valued by cat lovers from all over the world. However, the pet industry is a competitive one. It forces brands to keep improving their products and apply new techniques to reduce dust, minimalize tracking and make it clump even better.
As a result, there are some great alternatives on the market. Some are more economical, produce less dust, have less tracking or are made of 100% natural biodegradable ingredients.
With this review, we want to give you an overview of the best products that are out there on the market today. We provide you with all the information you need in order to pick the right dust free cat litter which fits your personal preferences and those of your cat. We have tested 15 brands and we will discuss all the pros and cons of each product in this article.
For our research, we looked at the following criteria:
- The dust levels of the cat litter
- Is it easy to clean the litter and does it clump well?
- The material of the cat litter
- Does it come perfumed or neutral
- The price range of the litter
- The feedback from other cat owners on Amazon, Chewy, and Petco
So without further ado, here is our:
2018 Dust Free Cat Litter Top 15
One of America’s favorite cat litter brand. The products of Dr. Bruce Elsey. Mr. Elsey is a veterinarian who is specialized in feline pets only. They produce one of the best dust free cat litter around. No wonder it has amazing reviews!
This litter is 100% natural, clumps very well, it does a great job at controlling odors and is 99.9% dust free!
Their Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter combines the heavy non-tracking granules of their classic litter with a medium grain clay. Combine this with the fact that Dr. Elsey’s products are manufactured with pure bentonite clay and not mixed with inferior products like some cheaper brands do, it guarantees you that it clumps very well and gets really hard. This litter has also a low tracking which keeps your house and our fur coats clean.
At the moment this product has over 14 thousand (!) reviews on Amazon from satisfied cat owners, giving it an average rating of 4.1/5 stars which is justified for such a great dust free cat litter.
Another very popular cat litter brand is Arm & Hammer.
This American company has been around since 1867 and is famous for its baking soda.
And baking soda is exactly what Arm & Hammer use in their cat litter! The baking soda has been added to the litter to control any unwanted smells leaving the litter box and it does a truly tremendous job. The product claims that you won’t smell the litter for over a week and from our personal experience, that’s absolutely true. And as for the dust concerned, we haven’t noticed any dust coming off it when we replaced the litter nor when we scooped dirt from the litter. The litter clumps well and form solid pieces which are easy to remove and the litter did not stick to the litter box, which is a major plus. So to us, the claim that they are 100% dust free cat litter is a valid one.
We can understand why this litter is very popular as it offers great value for money.
Purina is part of the Nestlé, the largest food and beverage company in the world. They are specialist when it comes to pet food and litter. Well known cat food brands like Purina One, Whiskers Lickin’s or Friskies might sound familiar to you. Tidy Cats is their brand that produces high-quality cat litter.
What is unique about the Tidy Cats 24/7 performance clumping cat litter is that it uses charcoals to fight the bad odors. Charcoal is known for its odor absorbing capabilities and Purina claims you will not smell the litter box for 2 whole weeks.
With 50 years of experience in developing and improving their cat litter, they managed to offer the consumer one of the best products you can buy today.
Purina Tidy Cats litter is definitely a litter you should consider if you are looking for a dust free solution which clutters well, hardly leaves any tracking and at the same time does an amazing job at fighting odors.
Another great product from Purina, the manufacturers of the 24/7 performance clumping litter makes it to our 4th spot. This time we are not reviewing a bentonite clay solution, but pellets which they have developed for their hugely popular Breeze cat litter system.
The Breeze cat litter box is a clever litter box which makes cleaning it a walk in the park.
It comes both as an open system and as a hooded system. It consists of the litter box, anti absorbing pads which go into the lower litter box compartment. They will hold the urine and prevent bad smells from escaping and on top of that go the Purina pellets. These pellets are made of Zeolite which many non-clumping cat litter is made of.
Personally, I prefer the hooded system to keep certain things out of sight (if you know what I mean). Unlike regular clumping litter, these pellets stick to the feces but don’t hide it as such.
They do perform an amazing job when it comes to odor control, they are dust free and cleaning the litter box is a piece of cake. Buyers of the Purina Breeze system pellets love the system, however, cat owners do complain about the fact that Purina keeps increasing the prices of the refill system and the absorbing pads.
Tip for Breeze system users: A good alternative for the Breeze pads are Amazon’s own pads. They are fully compatible with the Breeze system, are cheaper and get better reviews.
This litter is an interesting one and kind of (coco)nuts. CatSpot Litter is entirely made of coconuts! That’s right 100% natural coconuts. This litter is extremely light and 5lbs of CatSpot litter has the absorption capacity of 20 lbs of regular litter. There is absolutely no dust coming off the coconuts and therefore makes it an interesting choice for cats or humans with allergies.
The only thing that we have noticed is that the tracking can be above average, especially if you have a cat with longer hair. The small pieces of coconut could stick to their fur and be dragged around the house. But nothing a good cat brush can’t solve.
The material absorbs liquids very well, but you will start to smell it after a week or so. Even though Catspot claims that it stays odor free for up to 2 weeks, that is something we sincerely doubt.
But, if you are looking for a dust free, all natural solutions which at the end you can recycle in your own garden, you should give CatSpot 100% coconut cat litter a try.
This one is one of my personal favorites. Just like CatSpot Litter, this brand also uses 100% natural ingredients. This time something a little less tropical, they use dried grass!
This litter does not have any added chemicals, they do not use fragrances and there is no use of clay. It’s just 100% environmental friendly grass. The litter is absolutely dust free and the material is a sand-like texture. Very soft and paw-friendly. I am not sure if it ‘out clumps’ clay, like Smartcat claims, but it does clump extremely well!
Tracking issues are also minimal and it keeps smells under control. This is most definitely a dust free cat litter to watch and it has become one of my favorites. SmartCat gets my paw of approval!
7. PetSafe ScoopFree Premium Crystal Cat Litter
Petsafe is another well known US manufacturer of first class pet products.
Their crystal non-clumping pellets are made of silica mineral and they absorb liquids up to five times better than any clay-based cat litter.
This type of litter has been designed for their Scoopfree self-cleaning litter box system, but it can also be used for any other regular cat litter box.
Pay attention when you order these because there are three variations. The blue crystals ones which are slightly perfumed, the purple ones which have a lavender smell and the white ones, which are called sensitive and do not have any perfume nor dyes. I recommend you choose the white crystal ones because the other smells might be nice to a humans nose, but not every cat will appreciate their toilet smelling like lavender.
The pellets are completely dust free and last up to 4 weeks for a single cat household.
8. Cat’s Pride Fresh and Light Multi-Cat Litter
Another American family business that started 75 years ago with a product that helped to clean up oil from factory floors. Since then they went from cleaning factory halls to developing an extensive range of cat litter products. Cat’s pride fresh and light is a lightweight type of cat litter which is clay based.
People with allergies have confirmed that the cat litter is 99.9% dust free and even though this Amazon favorite litter comes perfumed, the smell is described by many as delicate and subtle. It doesn’t bother cats nor their owners.
As with most clay-based litters, this one does also a good job at clumping and with an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars, Cat pride litter might be a good alternative to the one you are using now.
9. Fresh Step Extreme Febreze Clumping Cat Litter
Fresh Step produces a range of cat litters. Their technology, Febreze, has been designed to fight bad odors and they are one of the few manufacturers who guarantee that the litter box smells good for up to 10 days! It seems that Fresh Step has a lot of faith in their odor fighting capabilities and I think they can back up that claim. I have used this litter which clumps very well, has almost zero tracking issues, is practically dust free and it didn’t smell at all after a week of use.
Mind you that this product which has a whopping 4.3 stars on Amazon is the extreme scent version of their litter, so if your cat is fussy about scented litter, then perhaps you should consider their unscented Fresh Step free and gentle cat litter or look at an alternative.
10. Garfield Cat Litter – All Natural Litter
Not sure if you knew (we sure didn’t), but just like Hello Kitty, Garfield also has it’s own cat litter brand. Both brands are marketed by a company called Petfive.
We are always a bit skeptical when a famous cartoon character is being used to sell cat products. But it turns out that the Garfield cat litter is surprisingly good. It’s affordable, the tracking is minimal (especially with the Bio Small version), the cat litter is dust free and it clumps well. Garfield litter clients also praise it for its ease of cleaning because it doesn’t stick.
The Garfield cat litter comes in three variations; Bio Tiny, Bio Small, and Non-Bio Tiny.
The differences between the three are the density of the texture. Tiny is a finer grain than Small and the first two are biodegradable. Unlike the Bio ones, the non-bio cannot be flushed down the toilet and needs to be discarded in the trash can. Personally, we recommend all litter to disappear in a garbage bag and never flush anything down the toilet. Ask your plumber, he will agree with us.
11. Boxiecat Extra Strength Premium Clumping Clay
Boxiecat cat litter is clay based litter which is very soft and very fine much like the texture of sand, but still dust free! Where other cheap sand-like litter clumps to the bottom of the litter box and makes cleaning harder, Boxiecat does not stick and you won’t have to scrape the bottom to remove the persistent bits. The litter handles urine very well, it clumps great and creates hard pieces which can be easily scooped out.
The odor control of Boxiecat is well above par and keeps unwanted ammonia smells out for a week. Just top it off once a week and replace the entire box after 3 weeks.
Interesting fact about Boxiecat is that many owners of long-haired cats have noticed that this litter doesn’t stick as much to their fur as with other brands.
Another cat litter from Tidy Cats which makes it into our top 15.
This time we are looking at the Tidy Cats solution which has been designed for a household with multiple cats.
The litter is a mixture of natural clay and a mineral product and is exceptionally light and dust free. The product clumps very well and keeps smells under control for quite some time. We found that the tracking is also minimal and it is scentless. Purina is an industry leader and once again has delivered a great product for your litter box.
Just like SmartCat All Natural Clumping Litter (grass) and CatSpot Litter (coconut) the Hartz brand uses 100% natural products, which in their case is recycled paper.
The result is lightweight cat litter pellets which clump very well and make cleaning very easy.
The pellets are white, but once they get in touch with a liquid substance they turn blue which makes it easy to spot the parts that need to be scooped out.
The odor control for urine is fine, but when it comes to feces bentonite clay wins every time.
Clay covers things up, while pellets rather just stick to it. Odor control for number two’s is not it’s strongest point. Low tracking, on the other hand, is something these paper pellets do very well. There is practically none.
So if you are looking for an environmentally friendly, dust free cat litter, which has great clumping capabilities and no scent, the Hartz recycled paper cat litter might be just the one for you.
Another great cat litter for the environmental aware cat owner comes from sWheat.
They use (you guessed it) 100% biodegradable wheat for their cat litter and recommends we keep the clay for pottery 🙂
The litter itself is dust free, clutters well and does a good job at odor control plus its biodegradable and therefore can be scooped up and flushed down the toilet, although I am personally not a huge fan of flushing things down the toilet. I am afraid it becomes a habit and if for some reason one day you have bought a different type of litter, there might be the risk of you trying to flush non-biodegradable litter down the toilet with all the negative consequences this could have.
The wheat litter itself doesn’t smell and the tracking is good. It does not stick to paws nor fur so it won’t be dragged throughout the whole house.
We think that sWheat Scoop is a great litter and definitely one to watch!
Last but not least. The number 15 in this is a cat litter brand from down under. The Australian brand Rufus & Coco have launched a biodegradable cat litter made of corn pellets.
As with most pellet style cat litter, not every cat is fond of the feeling on their paws.
Most cats have no issues with soft clay litter, but when it comes to pellets some cats (including me) are not keen to jump in. Rufus and Coco advice to sprinkle a layer of the current litter you currently use on top of the pellets to let them familiarize themselves with the new litter.
Rufus & Coco claim that their corn pellets are paw friendly and dust free. They clutter well and dirty bits can be disposed of using the toilet in small moderations. (mind the warning here…SMALL moderations). The tracking as with any type of pellets is basically a non-issue. No problems here.
Rufus & Coco have already taken their home market by storm and are now trying to take over the world. With an average rating of 4.2 stars out of 5 they have found some satisfied customers and if your cat likes pellet style litter and you care for the environment, you might want to give this litter a try.
When looking for dust free cat litter you have several options. It all comes down to a matter of personal preferences. Does your cat prefer pellets over clay-based litter? Do you or your cat mind when the litter has a perfume or does it have to be completely scent free? How important is the environment to you? Do you value cat litter made out of 100% natural material like corn, coconut, wheat or recycled paper? Or are you OK with using less environmentally friendly products like bentonite and silica-based cat litters?
Then there is the issue of tracking? Does your cat have long or a short fur? Where do you keep the litter box in your home? Do you use a cat mat which catches the majority of litter before the cat can drag it into your house? And finally, how much are you willing to spend on litter? These are all aspects you will need to take in consideration and are different for each cat owner.
All the brands in this top 15 have their pros and cons. It is often a matter of trying one type of litter and see if you and the cat like it. If you are both happy, great! If not, try one of the alternatives.
Our favorite dust free cat litter
If we had to pick a winner from this list it would be SmartCat All Natural Clumping Litter.
I personally used it and the texture of the grass material is so refined and soft on my paws that I couldn’t stop digging. I loved it! 😸
SmartCat’s litter is completely dust free, clumps very well and the dirty bits could easily be removed with the scoop. The tracking is also minimal because of the refined texture. In case it gets stuck to my fur and possibly ends up on my tongue, its good to know that no chemicals have been used and that its just dried grass.
Therefore SmartCat gets my 🐾 Paw Of Approval 🐾 Congratulations!
